What's included
Basement junk removal without the stairs
Basements are where things go when nobody knows what else to do with them. Old couches, broken exercise equipment, outgrown toys, holiday decorations and boxes from three moves ago all end up downstairs. Getting it back up is the hard part. JunkHaulAwayPros sends a crew to carry every item up the stairs and out the door.
- Stairs handled. Every trip up the stairs is on the crew.
- Heavy items welcome. Treadmills, freezers, sofas and pianos.
- Damp and flooded items. Wet boxes, carpet and furniture after leaks.
- Swept when finished. Floors swept so the space is ready to use.
Point out what you're keeping and the crew clears the rest. If you're turning the basement into a living space, they'll clear it down to the bare floor so contractors can get started.

Common reasons
When people book a basement cleanup
Basement cleanouts are usually triggered by a project, a move or a leak. These are the most common reasons.
Finishing the basement
Clearing space before turning it into a living area.
Water damage
Leaks and floods leave wet items that need to go quickly.
Moving
Basement storage is often the last thing packed and the hardest to move.
Selling the home
Buyers want to see an open, usable basement.
Estate cleanout
Family basements often hold decades of belongings.
Reclaiming storage
Making room for things you actually use.
A closer look
Getting the basement back in use
Basements have huge potential. They can become a family room, a home gym, a guest suite, a workshop or just well-organized storage. But in many homes, the basement becomes the place where things go when no one knows what else to do with them, and over time it fills up until it’s barely usable.
Clearing a basement is mostly about the stairs. Furniture, appliances and exercise equipment are heavy, and carrying them up a narrow staircase is where most injuries and wall damage happen. That’s why so many basement items stay put for years, and why having a crew handle the heavy lifting makes such a difference.
Moisture is the other big factor. Basements are prone to leaks, humidity and occasional flooding, which can damage cardboard boxes, upholstered furniture and paper goods. During a cleanout, it’s a good idea to check stored items for mold or water damage before deciding to keep them, since damp items can spread problems to the rest of the house.
Once the basement is empty, take the opportunity to look at walls, floors and corners for cracks, leaks or signs of pests. Storing whatever goes back in on shelving or in sealed plastic bins, off the floor, helps protect it from future moisture and keeps the space organized and usable.
On pickup day
What to expect when the crew arrives
Most basement cleanouts take a few hours. The crew protects the stairs and walls, carries items up and sorts as they load. Here's how it goes.
Quick walkthrough
You show the crew what's staying and what's going.
Stairs protected
Railings and walls along the stairway are guarded.
Carried up and out
Items are brought upstairs and sorted as they're loaded.
Floor swept
The basement is swept once it's clear.
Two ways to book
Full cleanout or a few big items
Some basements need a total reset. Others just need a few heavy items brought up. Either way, the crew handles the stairs.
Full basement cleanout
The crew clears everything you don't want to keep, working around anything that stays. Best for packed basements and pre-renovation projects.
Heavy item pickup
Just need the old couch, freezer and treadmill gone? The crew can bring up a few heavy pieces without a full cleanout.
If you're dealing with water damage, mention it when you book. Wet items are heavier, and the crew will plan for faster loading.
Responsible disposal
Where basement junk ends up
Basements often hide usable furniture, toys, sports gear and housewares. After loading, items in good, dry condition are separated for donation whenever possible.
Appliances, metal and electronics go to recyclers, cardboard is recycled when dry, and wet or moldy items are disposed of properly at approved facilities.
Below ground
Steep stairs, low ceilings
Basement stairs are often steep and narrow, with low headroom and a turn at the bottom. Heavy items like freezers, treadmills and sleeper sofas are tough to get up, and walk-out access isn't always available.
Crews carry items with the right technique and enough people, protect railings and walls, and take apart furniture or equipment when needed to make it fit. Wet items are loaded carefully to avoid drips through the house.
If you have a walk-out door or bulkhead entrance, mention it when you book. It can speed up the job considerably.

Basement cleanout tips
Watch for water damage
Check boxes for mold or moisture before deciding what to keep. Damp cardboard often hides damaged belongings.
Old paint and chemicals stay
Basements often hold paint, solvents and cleaners that can't be hauled. Set them aside for hazardous waste drop-off.
Turn on the lights
Good lighting helps the crew work safely, especially on stairs and in storage rooms.
Quick prep
Getting the basement ready
Here's how to prepare for a smooth basement cleanout.
- Pull out keepers. Move items you're keeping to one area.
- Set aside hazards. Paint, chemicals and fuel can't go.
- Clear the stairs. Remove anything stored on or near the steps.
- Note outside access. Walk-out doors or bulkheads help.
Weighing your options
Carrying it up yourself?
Basement cleanouts are hard on your body. Every item has to be carried up the stairs, and heavy pieces like freezers and treadmills need multiple people. Then there's the truck rental and the trips to the donation center and the landfill.
| Task | Doing it yourself | With a crew |
|---|---|---|
| Lifting & stairs | You and whoever you can recruit | Handled by trained pros |
| Transportation | Borrow or rent a truck or trailer | Truck arrives with the crew |
| Finding a drop-off | Call around about charities, landfills and city rules | Sorted for donation, recycling or disposal |
| Time | Often half a day or more | Usually under an hour on site |
| Risk | Strained backs, scuffed walls, dented doorframes | Floors and walls protected |
A few boxes can easily go out with regular trash. For heavy furniture, appliances or a full basement, a crew handles the stairs and the disposal.

Basement Cleanout FAQ
Basement junk questions
Don't see your question? Send us a note and we'll get back to you within one business day.
How long does a basement cleanout take?
Most basement cleanouts take one to several hours, depending on how full the basement is, how many heavy items there are and how steep the stairs are. A walk-out basement goes faster than one with a narrow interior staircase. Photos of the space and the stairs help us estimate the time and send the right size crew so the job is done efficiently. Walk-out basements are usually the quickest to clear, since items can go straight out the door.
Can you remove flood-damaged items?
Yes. Wet carpet, padding, boxes, furniture and drywall pieces from leaks and floods are common basement pickups. Removing them quickly helps prevent mold. Wet items are much heavier than dry ones, so let us know about water damage when you book. Water removal, drying and mold remediation are separate services and should be handled by a restoration company. Removing wet items quickly is one of the best ways to limit mold growth in the space.
Do you take heavy items like freezers and treadmills?
Absolutely. Chest freezers, upright freezers, treadmills, home gyms, sleeper sofas, pianos and workbenches are all common basement items. The crew uses proper technique and enough people to carry them up the stairs safely, and may disassemble equipment to reduce weight. Freezers should be emptied and defrosted, and treadmills unplugged, before the crew arrives. Weights and plates can be grouped in one place ahead of time to speed up loading.
Can you clear out the basement before a renovation?
Yes. Clearing the basement down to the bare floor before a finishing project is one of the most common requests. The crew removes everything you're not keeping, including old carpet, shelving and storage, so contractors can start right away. After construction, the crew can come back for remodel debris like drywall scraps and flooring. Old shelving and storage systems can be removed at the same time to fully open the space.
What happens to my basement junk?
Everything is sorted as it's loaded. Dry, usable items like furniture, toys and sports gear are separated for donation whenever possible. Appliances, metal and electronics go to recyclers, and dry cardboard is recycled. Wet, moldy or damaged items are taken to approved disposal facilities. Donation always depends on each item's condition. Items in good, dry condition are much more likely to be accepted for donation.
