What's included
Old carpet haul away before the new floors
Carpet is one of the heaviest and messiest things to get rid of during a remodel. A single room can produce several bulky rolls that weigh 50 to 100 pounds each, plus bags of crumbling padding and strips of tack board full of nails. JunkHaulAwayPros sends a crew that carries it all out and hauls it away so your installer can get straight to work.
- Rolls carried out. From bedrooms, basements, hallways and stairways.
- Padding bagged. Foam and rubber pad collected along with the carpet.
- Tack strip too. Nail strips gathered and loaded safely.
- Area rugs welcome. Old rugs, runners and mats in the same trip.
Removal is for carpet that has already been pulled up and rolled, or area rugs that are ready to go. If the carpet is still installed, let us know when you book and we'll tell you what's possible in your area.

Common reasons
When people need carpet disposal
Most carpet lasts ten to fifteen years before it's worn, stained or simply out of style. These are the projects that usually lead to a pickup.
Switching to hardwood
Pulling up carpet to install wood, vinyl plank or tile.
Water damage
Flooded basements and leaks leave wet carpet that needs to go fast.
Pet damage and odors
Stains and smells that cleaning can't fix.
Selling the home
Fresh floors help listings, and the old carpet has to go somewhere.
Rental turnover
Landlords replace worn carpet between tenants.
Old rugs piling up
Rugs rolled up in closets and basements for years.
A closer look
Getting ready for new floors
Replacing carpet is one of the most effective ways to refresh a home, whether you’re switching to hardwood, luxury vinyl plank or simply installing new carpet. But before anything new goes down, the old carpet, padding and tack strip have to come up and go somewhere.
Installers handle removal differently. Some include haul away, some charge extra for it and others leave the old carpet rolled up in the garage or driveway. If yours won’t haul it away, scheduling a pickup right after removal keeps the work area clear and prevents a soggy pile from sitting outside.
Water-damaged carpet needs to move faster. After a leak or flood, wet carpet and padding can develop mold within a day or two. Pulling it up quickly, bagging the padding and getting it out of the house helps the subfloor dry and reduces the risk of lingering odors.
Once the old flooring is gone, check the subfloor for damage, squeaks or stains before installation. It’s much easier to fix those problems while the floor is bare than after new flooring goes in.
On pickup day
What to expect when the crew arrives
Carpet pickups move quickly once everything is rolled. The crew carries rolls and bags out, protects floors and walls along the way and leaves the room clear. Here's how the visit goes.
A heads-up first
You'll know your arrival window ahead of time, so you can plan the rest of your day around it.
A quick walkthrough
Point out what's going and what's staying. The crew checks the easiest route out of the house.
Careful removal
Background-checked pros protect floors and walls, take items apart if needed and carry everything out.
Swept and sorted
The area gets a quick sweep, and everything is sorted for donation, recycling or disposal.
Two ways to book
Inside the house or out by the curb
Choose the pickup option that works for your project. Most people let the crew carry heavy rolls out of the house.
In-home pickup
The crew carries rolled carpet and bagged padding out of bedrooms, basements and stairways. It's best for big jobs and heavy, wet carpet.
Curbside pickup
If your installer has already moved it outside, leave the rolls in the garage or driveway, and you don't need to be home.
Wet carpet gets very heavy. If water damage is involved, mention it when you book so the crew can bring enough people and plan to load it quickly.
Responsible disposal
Carpet recycling where it's possible
Carpet takes up a lot of landfill space, and much of it is made from nylon and polyester that can be recovered. Carpet recycling facilities don't operate everywhere, though, so options depend on your area.
Where recyclers accept it, clean, dry carpet and foam padding are sent for processing into new materials. Rugs in good condition may be donated. Wet, moldy or contaminated carpet and tack strip are disposed of properly.
Heavy rolls
Stairs, basements and wet carpet
Carpet is heaviest when it's coming out of a basement, especially after a leak or flood. Long rolls are awkward on stairs, and wet padding can drip and stain floors on the way out.
Crews carry rolls in manageable lengths, keep wet carpet contained and protect walls and railings as they go. Padding is bagged and tack strip is handled carefully so nails don't scratch floors or hands.
If the carpet is water-damaged, still attached to the floor or coming off stairs, mention it when you book. It helps the crew show up with the right people and plan.

Carpet removal pointers
Roll it in sections
Cutting carpet into strips about three to four feet wide before rolling makes each roll much easier and safer to carry.
Bag the padding
Foam pad crumbles as it ages. Bagging it keeps dust and debris contained and makes the pickup cleaner.
Watch for nails
Tack strip is full of sharp nails. Bundle it with tape or leave it in a box so no one gets scratched while loading.
Quick prep
Getting it ready to go
A few prep steps make carpet pickup faster and safer.
- Cut and roll it. Cut carpet into strips and roll it tightly.
- Bag the pad. Put loose padding in contractor bags.
- Box the tack strip. Keep nail strips bundled or boxed.
- Clear a path. Move furniture out of the way between the rolls and the door.
Weighing your options
Hauling it yourself?
Carpet from even one bedroom can fill an SUV, and rolls are heavy, dusty and hard to fit in a vehicle. Many curbside trash programs limit how much carpet you can set out, require it to be cut into short rolls and tied, or only take it on bulk days. Transfer stations often charge by weight.
| Task | Doing it yourself | With a crew |
|---|---|---|
| Lifting & stairs | You and whoever you can recruit | Handled by trained pros |
| Transportation | Borrow or rent a truck or trailer | Truck arrives with the crew |
| Finding a drop-off | Call around about charities, landfills and city rules | Sorted for donation, recycling or disposal |
| Time | Often half a day or more | Usually under an hour on site |
| Risk | Strained backs, scuffed walls, dented doorframes | Floors and walls protected |
A single area rug is easy to toss. For whole rooms, basements or wet carpet, a crew clears it out in one trip and saves you the mess.

Carpet Removal FAQ
Carpet haul away questions
Don't see your question? Send us a note and we'll get back to you within one business day.
Do you pull up the carpet or just haul it away?
The standard service is hauling away carpet, padding and tack strip that's already been pulled up, which is how most remodels work since installers usually remove the old floor. If your carpet is still installed and you'd like it removed, mention it when you book and we'll let you know what's possible in your area. Area rugs can always be picked up as they are. Wearing gloves and knee pads makes pulling up old carpet much easier if you do it yourself.
Can you take wet or water-damaged carpet?
Yes. Wet carpet from leaks, burst pipes and flooded basements is a common pickup and should be removed quickly to prevent mold. Wet carpet is much heavier than dry, so please let us know about water damage when you book, along with roughly how many rooms are affected. The crew will plan for enough people and load it quickly to limit drips and odors. Fans and dehumidifiers can help dry the subfloor once wet carpet has been removed.
Do I need to cut the carpet into rolls?
It helps. Cutting carpet into strips about three to four feet wide and rolling them tightly makes each roll easier to carry and load, especially on stairs. Bag loose padding and bundle or box tack strip. If you haven't had a chance to cut it, mention that when you book so the crew can plan. Wall-to-wall carpet left in huge pieces takes longer to move. Duct tape is an easy way to keep rolls tight so they don't unroll during loading.
Is old carpet recycled?
When possible. Carpet recycling facilities operate in some areas but not all, and they usually require carpet to be clean and dry. Where it's accepted, carpet and foam padding are sent for recycling into new products. Rugs in good shape may be donated. Wet, moldy or heavily soiled carpet and tack strip are disposed of at approved facilities. Clean, dry carpet has the best chance of being accepted by recycling programs.
Can you take other flooring and remodel debris?
Yes. Vinyl, laminate, engineered wood, ceramic tile in reasonable amounts, baseboards and subfloor pieces can all go in the same pickup as your carpet. Old cabinets, vanities, toilets and doors from a remodel are welcome too. Heavy materials like tile and stone add up quickly, so let us know roughly how much you have when you book. Leftover planks and boxes from your new flooring can go in the same pickup.
