What's included

Garage junk removal in one visit

Garages fill up a little at a time: a box from the last move, a bike nobody rides, the old patio set, extra paint cans and a broken freezer. Before long, the car is in the driveway. JunkHaulAwayPros sends a crew to clear it all at once, carrying out everything you're done with and leaving a clean, open floor.

  • Boxes, bins and bags. Years of storage cleared out at once.
  • Heavy items too. Freezers, workbenches, tool chests and lawn equipment.
  • Shelving removed. Freestanding shelves and detached storage racks.
  • Swept when finished. Dust, leaves and debris swept out.

You decide what stays. Point out what you're keeping, or move it to one side, and the crew handles the rest. Hazardous items like old paint, fuel and chemicals need to be set aside for a hazardous waste drop-off.

Common reasons

When it's time for a garage cleanup

Garages tend to get cleared out when something forces the issue. These are the most common reasons.

Want to park inside

Winter weather or a new car makes garage space valuable again.

Moving

Clear out what isn't worth taking before the movers arrive.

Selling the house

Empty garages look bigger and help homes sell.

Turning it into a gym or shop

Clearing space for a new purpose.

Estate cleanup

Garages in family homes often hold decades of storage.

Pest problems

Clutter attracts rodents and insects, and clearing it helps.

A closer look

Making the garage work for you again

The garage is one of the most valuable spaces in a home, but it’s also the easiest to lose to clutter. Boxes from a move, sports gear the kids outgrew, a broken freezer and leftover building materials slowly crowd out the car, the workbench and the storage you actually need.

A cleanout is the fastest way to reset. Instead of sorting one shelf at a time over many weekends, everything that’s going leaves in one visit. That makes it much easier to see the space for what it is and decide how you want to use it, whether that’s parking, a home gym, a workshop or organized storage.

Once the garage is clear, it’s the perfect time to check for problems hiding behind the clutter. Look for water stains, cracked floors, rodent droppings and damaged drywall. It’s also a great moment to install wall storage, overhead racks or cabinets, so items stay off the floor and the garage stays usable.

To keep it that way, many homeowners set a simple rule: anything that comes into the garage needs a home. Regular, smaller cleanouts once or twice a year are far easier than tackling a decade of accumulation all at once.

On pickup day

What to expect when the crew arrives

Most garage cleanouts take a few hours, depending on how full it is. The crew sorts, loads and sweeps. Here's how it goes.

1

Quick walkthrough

You point out what stays and what goes.

2

Clear and sort

The crew carries items out and separates donations and recycling.

3

Heavy items handled

Freezers, benches and equipment are loaded safely.

4

Swept clean

The floor is swept so you can organize what's left.

Two ways to book

Full cleanout or just the junk

Every garage is different. Some need a total reset, while others just need the junk pile hauled away.

Full garage cleanout

The crew helps clear the entire garage, working around what you keep. Best for garages packed wall to wall.

Pile pickup

If you've already sorted and piled what's going, the crew loads the pile and you don't need to be home.

Opening the garage door and leaving keepers in a marked corner is all you need to do for a pile pickup.

Responsible disposal

Garage junk sorted responsibly

Garages often hold plenty of usable items: bikes, tools, sports gear and furniture that just ran out of room. After loading, these are separated for donation whenever possible.

Metal shelving, appliances, tools and car parts go to scrap and appliance recyclers, cardboard is recycled and only the rest goes to disposal. Hazardous liquids are left for local drop-off programs.

Packed to the ceiling

Wall-to-wall boxes and heavy equipment

A truly full garage can be tough to tackle. Boxes are stacked to the ceiling, heavy items are buried in the back, and it's hard to sort what's worth keeping without taking everything out first.

Crews work from front to back, pulling items out so you can make quick decisions. Heavy freezers, tool chests and workbenches are carried out safely, and everything is sorted as it's loaded.

If your garage is completely full, let us know when you book. Photos help the crew plan enough truck space and time.

Garage cleanout tips

1

Set aside hazardous items

Old paint, solvents, pesticides, fuel, propane and car fluids can't be hauled. Gather them for a household hazardous waste drop-off.

2

Drain lawn equipment

Gas mowers, trimmers and blowers need empty fuel tanks before they can be loaded.

3

Decide on shelving

If you're reorganizing afterward, decide whether old shelving stays before the crew starts.

Quick prep

Prep for cleanout day

You don't need to sort everything ahead of time, but a few steps help.

  1. Pull out keepers. Move anything staying to one side or mark it.
  2. Gather hazardous items. Set paint, fuel and chemicals apart.
  3. Move the car. Park in the street so the crew has room to work.
  4. Open the garage. Leave the door open or share the code.

Weighing your options

Tackling it yourself?

A DIY garage cleanout usually takes a full weekend and several trips. Donations go one place, scrap metal another and trash to the landfill, each with its own hours and rules. Heavy items like freezers and workbenches need extra help and a truck.

If you're only clearing a few boxes, a weekend project is manageable. For a packed garage, heavy items or a tight timeline, a crew clears it in one visit.

Garage Cleanout FAQ

Garage cleanout questions

Don't see your question? Send us a note and we'll get back to you within one business day.

How long does a garage cleanout take?

Most garage cleanouts take one to a few hours. A garage with a few piles of junk can be cleared quickly, while one that's packed wall to wall with boxes, furniture and heavy equipment takes longer and may need extra truck space. Photos of the garage help us estimate the time and send the right size crew, so you're not left waiting. Larger detached garages or workshops may need a little more time and truck space.

Do I need to sort everything first?

No. You only need to know what you want to keep. Set keepers aside, mark them, or walk through with the crew and point them out. The crew can pull items out so you can make quick decisions on anything you're unsure about. Everything that's going is sorted as it's loaded, with donations and recyclables separated from trash. If you're unsure about an item, the crew can set it aside for you to decide.

Can you take old paint and chemicals from the garage?

No. Wet paint, stains, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil, gasoline and propane tanks are hazardous and can't be hauled. Gather them in one spot for a household hazardous waste drop-off, which your city or county can point you to. Completely dried-out paint cans and empty containers can usually go with the rest of the junk. Your local household hazardous waste program can tell you when and where to drop items off.

Will you take a garage freezer or fridge?

Yes. Old garage refrigerators, chest freezers and beverage coolers can be hauled away along with everything else. Empty them, unplug them and let them defrost ahead of time. They'll go to appliance recyclers that handle refrigerant properly. Heavy freezers are carried out by two people, so mention them when you book so the crew comes prepared. Freezers with leftover food should be emptied a day ahead so they can dry out.

Can you remove shelving and workbenches?

Yes. Freestanding metal and plastic shelving, storage racks, wood workbenches and tool chests can all be hauled away. Empty them first if possible. Wall-mounted shelving and cabinets should be detached before pickup, or mention them when you book so we can let you know what's possible. Bolted-down equipment may need to be unbolted ahead of time. Removing old shelving now makes it easier to install a new storage system afterward.
