What's included
Storage unit junk removal in one trip
Storage units are meant to be temporary, but many end up holding the same boxes for years while the monthly bill adds up. JunkHaulAwayPros sends a crew to empty the unit, load everything you no longer want and leave it swept so you can close out your rental.
- Any size unit. Small lockers to large drive-up units.
- Indoor or drive-up. Elevators, carts and hallways at climate-controlled facilities.
- Sorted as loaded. Donations and recyclables separated.
- Swept clean. Ready for the facility's move-out inspection.
You can meet the crew at the facility to point out what stays, or arrange gate access and leave the unit unlocked. If you're keeping a few things, the crew can set them aside or load them into your vehicle.

Common reasons
When people book storage unit cleanup
Most people clear their unit when the monthly payments stop making sense. These are the common reasons.
Cutting costs
Monthly storage fees add up over the years.
Done moving
Items stored during a move were never retrieved.
Inherited a unit
Families clearing a loved one's storage.
Business closed
Stored inventory, files and fixtures no longer needed.
Rent increase
A rate hike makes it time to let go.
Facility deadline
The unit needs to be emptied by a set date.
A closer look
What it really costs to keep a unit
Storage units are designed to be a short-term solution during a move, a renovation or a life change. But many end up rented for years, holding furniture and boxes that haven’t been opened since the day they were dropped off. Over that time, the monthly payments can easily add up to more than the items inside are worth.
Rent increases make that math even harder. Many facilities raise rates after the first few months or once a year, so a unit that seemed affordable at move-in can become a much bigger line item. Taking stock of what’s actually inside is usually the first step toward deciding it’s time to let go.
Clearing a unit doesn’t have to mean throwing everything away. Furniture in good condition can be donated to local charities, boxes of clothing and housewares can find new homes, and appliances and metal can be recycled. Only damaged or unusable items need to go to disposal, and the crew sorts as they load.
Once the unit is empty and swept, remember to give your facility proper notice to end the rental. Most facilities need written notice before your next billing date, and some charge cleaning fees for units left with items or debris inside. A broom-clean unit and a timely notice help you close the account without surprises.
On pickup day
What to expect when the crew arrives
Most storage unit cleanouts take an hour or two. The crew works within facility rules, loads efficiently and sweeps the unit. Here's how it goes.
Gate access ready
You share the gate code or meet the crew at the facility.
Keepers set aside
Anything you're keeping is separated first.
Unit emptied
Everything else is carried out and loaded onto the truck.
Swept for move-out
The unit is swept so you can close your rental.
Two ways to book
Meet the crew or don't
You can be at the facility during the cleanout or arrange access so the crew can work without you.
Meet at the facility
Walk through the unit with the crew and decide on items as they come out. Best when there's a mix of keepers and junk.
Remote cleanout
Share the gate code, leave the unit unlocked or add the crew to your access list, and everything is cleared without you.
Some facilities require you to add authorized people to your account before they can enter. Check with the facility office ahead of time.
Responsible disposal
Where stored items end up
Stored items are often in good condition, especially furniture that was put away during a move. After loading, usable items are separated for donation to local charities.
Appliances, metal and electronics go to recyclers, and cardboard boxes are recycled. Items damaged by moisture, pests or age are disposed of properly.
Facility rules
Gate codes, hallways and tight units
Storage facilities have their own rules: access hours, gate codes, elevator use and limits on how long trucks can park in loading areas. Indoor units often require carts and long walks down hallways.
Crews plan around facility hours, use carts and elevators where needed and load quickly to keep driveways clear. Packed units are emptied from front to back so keepers can be pulled out along the way.
Share the facility name, unit size and any access requirements when you book so the crew can plan the visit.

Storage cleanout tips
Check facility hours
Many facilities limit access hours. Schedule the cleanout within those times so the crew can get in.
Add the crew to your account
Some facilities require authorized names on file. Call the office before the cleanout day.
Give notice to move out
Many facilities need written notice to end your rental. Time it so you're not billed another month.
Quick prep
Before cleanout day
A little prep makes a storage unit cleanout quick and easy.
- Confirm access. Gate codes, keys and authorized names.
- Know your keepers. Decide what's coming home with you.
- Check facility hours. Book within allowed access times.
- Give move-out notice. Close the account after it's empty.
Weighing your options
Emptying it yourself?
Clearing a storage unit yourself usually means renting a truck, recruiting help, loading everything and then driving it to donation centers, scrap yards and the landfill. Many facilities don't allow dumping in their dumpsters and charge fees for items left behind.
| Task | Doing it yourself | With a crew |
|---|---|---|
| Lifting & stairs | You and whoever you can recruit | Handled by trained pros |
| Transportation | Borrow or rent a truck or trailer | Truck arrives with the crew |
| Finding a drop-off | Call around about charities, landfills and city rules | Sorted for donation, recycling or disposal |
| Time | Often half a day or more | Usually under an hour on site |
| Risk | Strained backs, scuffed walls, dented doorframes | Floors and walls protected |
A small locker with a few boxes is easy to clear with a car. For larger units, heavy furniture or a tight deadline, a crew empties it in one trip.

Storage Unit Cleanout FAQ
Storage unit questions
Don't see your question? Send us a note and we'll get back to you within one business day.
Do I need to be at the storage facility?
No. Many storage cleanouts are done without the renter present. Share the gate code, make sure the crew is authorized with the facility if required, and leave the unit unlocked or provide the key. If you're keeping certain items, label them clearly or leave instructions. You'll get an update once the unit is empty and swept, ready for move-out. Many renters find it easiest to handle the facility paperwork the same day as the cleanout.
How long does a storage unit cleanout take?
Most storage unit cleanouts take one to two hours, depending on the unit size, how tightly it's packed and whether it's a drive-up or indoor unit. Indoor units with long hallways and elevators take a little longer. Share the unit size and a photo when you book so the right crew and truck space are scheduled. Very tightly packed units or upper-floor indoor units may take a little longer.
Can you take only some items and leave the rest?
Yes. If you're downsizing your unit rather than closing it, point out what's going and the crew will remove only those items. Keepers can be rearranged in the unit or loaded into your vehicle if you're taking them home. Clear labels or a quick walkthrough help make sure the right things leave. Remaining items can also be rearranged toward the front so the smaller unit is easy to access.
What if my unit is full of old business inventory?
That's common. Old inventory, displays, files, office furniture and fixtures stored by businesses can all be hauled away. Usable goods may be donated where possible. Confidential documents should be shredded before pickup or handled by a document destruction service. Let us know what kind of items are in the unit when you book. Unopened business supplies and office furniture are often welcome at local nonprofits.
Will you sweep the unit for move-out?
Yes. Once the unit is empty, the crew sweeps it out so it's ready for the facility's move-out inspection. Many facilities charge cleaning fees for units left dirty or with items inside, so a broom-clean finish helps you avoid extra charges. Remember to give the facility notice to end your rental once the unit is empty. A quick photo of the empty unit can be useful if the facility has any questions later.
